Silicone vs Rubber: What’s the Difference?

At first glance, silicone and rubber might seem like interchangeable terms, but there are some key distinctions between these two materials, especially when it comes to their properties and applications. Here’s a breakdown to help you choose the right material for your needs:

Material Origin:

  • Rubber: A natural material derived from the milky white sap (latex) of certain trees, primarily the Pará rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis). Synthetic rubbers are also produced from petroleum-based chemicals.
  • Silicone: A synthetic polymer made from combining silicon (the second most abundant element in the earth’s crust) with oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen.

Chemical Structure:

  • Rubber: Contains a chain of carbon atoms, giving it a flexible and elastic nature. Different types of rubber (natural vs. synthetic) have varying properties depending on their molecular structure.
  • Silicone: The backbone of the silicone molecule is made up of alternating silicon and oxygen atoms. This structure gives silicone unique properties compared to rubber.

Key Property Differences:

  • Temperature Resistance: Silicone generally outperforms rubber in terms of temperature resistance. It can withstand extreme temperatures, both high and low, without degradation. Rubber, especially natural rubber, can become brittle at low temperatures and melt at high temperatures.
  • Chemical Resistance: Silicone offers excellent resistance to a wider range of chemicals, including oils, acids, and solvents. Some types of rubber might have good resistance to specific chemicals, but not as universally as silicone.
  • Weather Resistance: Silicone is highly resistant to weathering effects like sunlight, ozone, and UV rays, making it suitable for outdoor applications. Rubber, particularly natural rubber, can deteriorate over time when exposed to these elements.
  • Flexibility: Both materials offer good flexibility, but silicone might have a smoother and more elastic feel compared to some types of rubber.
  • Biocompatibility: Certain grades of silicone are biocompatible, meaning they can be used in medical applications where they come into contact with human tissue. Rubber is generally not considered biocompatible.

Applications:

  • Silicone: Due to its versatility, silicone finds use in various applications, including cookware, gaskets, medical implants, electronics, and sealants.
  • Rubber: Common applications of rubber include tires, hoses, gaskets, gloves, shoe soles, and balls. The specific type of rubber used depends on the desired properties for the application.
